Not saying it was Batman Begins or not fun. But VR Troopers was clearly a bit more mature than MMPR was at the time. Saban even mentioned that it would be in a tv guide article he was quoted in at the time.

For one thing the characters were young adults and had real jobs. They weren't high school students. The villians were more like later PR villians. While some were played for comic relief , Grimlord diffinitly wasn't. There were only a few times when he was the but of jokes in human form. But it wasn't a common thing. As Ziktor had a lot of scenes away from the Troopers. The show was able to get away with sightly more violence and adult situations ( still very much a kids show just that you could do a bit more on syndication than on a broadcast network).

The whole storyline of Ryan looking for his Dad was darker than MMPR. Ryan was deprived of his Dad for most of his life. And to top it all off we knew his dad was a prisioner of Grimlord all this time. Sure it got a happy ending in season 2, but this storyline was still there.

The Troopers were more soldier like and most of their vichules reflected this. Season 1 made Grimlord's forces look like an army. Whereas MMPR mainly just stuck to monster of the day.

VR Troopers had plenty of lighthearted momments but it was clearly darker than MMPR.
