It was probably done this way to show kids that nice guys were able to finish first. And being a so called nerd really wasn't a bad thing.

I think they might have also done it since a lot of kids identified with him it was a way to live vicariously through him.

Billy was pretty relatable for most kids who had a hard time fitting in or had confidence problems
