Why did Carlos become Black Ranger?
It just seems odd because TJ was the leader in Turbo and still a natural leader in Space. Yet Black gets a lot of scenes of being in charge while in the Megazord.

It didn't change the fact that TJ was still the leader when Andros wasn't around. It was just the sentai footage, since Megablack was more of a leader in Megaranger. Carlos going from Green to Black seemed like a seemless transition. So it made sense to do the colors the way they did it.

simply put it was to avoid the whole "Saban is racist" "Power Rangers is racist" stuff they got when Walter a black was cast as the Black Ranger and Thuy an Asian was cast as Yellow.

I didn't like how they tried to make him the next Adam. He was no Adam, thats for sure.

This bothered me a bit as a TJ guy at the time. It was hard enough seeing him not be Red anymore, in the beginning. But I think its pretty clear TJ was at least second in command. In a lot lf ways he still acted like a leader.

Its all because Andros owned the ship and knew more about Space. If Andros joined the Turbo's on Earth, TJ would have still been Red. Carlos definitely was not second in command.

Carlos did seem to lead more in the Megazord,when Andros wasn't around.
